We hope that Blog finds you all happy and healthy!  Please grab a cup of coffee or iced cold lemonade and enjoy this blog. It is full of lots of fun photos. We do not want to bore you with all of our photos, but if you have any of the places that we have traveled and written about in this Blog, then we think that you will be happy with all of the beautiful photos!  We are currently still in beautiful Roatan, Honduras and will be departing for Panama tomorrow. We have been doing a lot of diving while we have been here and assisting the marina in organizing numerous events.  We were supposed to leave over a week ago, but the rudder and autopilot went out and then by the time it was fixed, the weather window to leave closed up fast.

A HUGE THANK YOU TO  ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL  BIRTHDAY WISHES FOR JOANNE!   : )

We have entered our 5 th year cruising aboard ULTRA!  :)  We will cross into and celebrate our 14th year of our marriage full of adventures on June 23, 2014!  AMAZING!  We say to each other as a joke, for each year we are married aboard, that it should for count for 5 years, together 24/7 for 5 years!  WOWIE!  70 years of marriage. We looked it up, 50th is Golden and 70th is Platinum.

We want to first say that we cannot believe it has been 5 months since we last updated our blog.  So sorry to have let you all down.  AMAZING!  TIME FLIES! We also had the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH on the laptop for the past month.  We had a whirlwind summer and were blessed to take a TRIP OF A LIFETIME to The Mediterranean and Beyond! Guatemala, England, Greece, Turkey, Florida, Texas and then to Honduras! Some people have asked how to find us on Facebook. It is Bill N JoAnne Harris or also can be found by our email address.

We have had quite an adventure these past months and you will see from the photos that there is definitely not a shortage of photos!  : )  Photos say a 1,000 words, but in this case 1 Million! :  ) After returning from our European Travels, we arrived in Guatemala City. We scheduled an appointment with the US Embassy, after realizing our passports only had space for 2 more stamps which would be filled after checking out of Guatemala.  At the US Embassy, we received what is a called a Passport Book.  In a little over 5 years, we had filled up all of our Passport Pages with stamps, and our passports do not expire for another few years.  We decided since it was $90 US to get a Passport Book (additional pages in existing passports) or an entire new Passport $135 US.   NOTE TO SELF: Always be sure your passport is up to date and be sure you have enough pages to received stamps and visas for the countries you visit.  Also, some countries will not let you travel within their country if your passport expires within a 6 month period while when you arrive.

Since August 2013 we traveled by land and sail the following countries: Lots of currencies flying around!
1) GUATEMALA:Currency: Quetzals: $1USD = 8Q
2) ENGLAND: Currency: British Pound: $1.67USD=1BP
3) GREECE: Currency: Euro: $1.38USD = 1E
4) TURKEY: Currency: Liras: $1USD = 1.80TL
5) USA:
6) HONDURAS: Currency: Lempiras: $1USD = 20Lemps

Oh, my, where do we even begin.  When we last wrote, we were in Rio Dulce, Guatemala.  Guatemala was a great experience and a beautiful country full of really friendly people and amazing flora and fauna. It was our first time to travel there.  While there, Ultra was in Mario’s Marina for hurricane season and we hosted Ultra movie nights at Mario’s Marina.  It was a lot of fun!  We were invited to sail with friends, Russ and Mary Kay, that we had met in Grenada Summer 2013 and had shipped their boat on a Dockwise Ship from Martinique last year to be part of a Rally. However, shortly after that the political status of the areas east of Greece all the way to Egypt were really deteriorating.  The places on the Rally list they had signed up for, were: Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt. The entire Rally of 65 boats was cancelled due to these problems and the boats that did decide to still go for it, could not get insurance.  Unfortunately,  the political situation in some of the areas we were to sail with them had continued to deteriorate further.  Since the situation escalated by the summer, the only possible places left on the list for us to travel safely were Greece and Turkey. Even though Greece and Turkey were still having their issues with human rights protests.  We cashed in our airline miles and got tickets from Guatemala to London to Athens, Greece and then island hopped through Greece and then rendezvoused with Russ and Mary Kay in Rhodes, Greece.  We had a great adventure of sailing from Greek Island to Greek Island. We then had the joy of going sailing to Turkey.  This is an amazing place.  The economy is booming and many parts of it are extremely metropolitan as you can see from the photos.  The weather was perfect during our visit. In Turkey, the only issue we wild weather we experienced which was called the meltame, this the crazy 40 and 50 knot winds and confused seas that we received while underway from place to place. Quite the cold and wet ride and white knuckling when the boat had full sails up and was completely heeled over.  Almost everything inside was all over the floor.  We are not quite used to this, since we have been in the warm and sunny waters of the Caribbean. We felt like we needed a parka!  : ) We had the opportunity of being in The Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea, Marmara Sea (which is almost to the Black Sea). ***********

From the Rio Dulce, we hopped on an 8 hour bus ride that would take us to Guatemala City, and then from there a one night hotel stay to catch an 8:30 a.m. flight to London Heathrow Airport.  There we had a 10 hour layover.  We checked one of our backpacks at the airport for the cost of $10 USD.  CRAZY!  We then bought day rail passes and jumped on The Tube and got off in Central London to explore the sites. AMAZING!  Bill had been about 20 years ago, but JoAnne had always talked to co-workers in London while working at Enron, but had never been.  Great to see all of the famous landmarks! Of course, we had packed super light.  A sweater, but his is London, and it was a little nippy for us that have been in the tropics forever.  We had been sightseeing for about 1 hour, and then the cold wind and rain came.  Of course, this is London, why should we be surprised.  Yes, sandals, jeans, and sweaters, hmmm… We had Mickey Mouse Disney rain panchos in our backpack, but that was not quite good enough.  We had to purchase umbrellas. The people on the street were selling them for 5 pounds each. ($9.00) for a super cheapy umbrella. A clear plastic bag rain poncho was eq. $4 USD.  So you know us, okay walk in the rain a little, sightsee and then spot a bargain.  Two umbrellas for 5 pounds.  Woo hoo.  We had the option of bright pink or bright pink with polka dots.  Okay, one of each!  Bill then used the plastic bags from the umbrella purchase to line the inside of his sandals so his feet did not get cold and wet. Now we are walking in the rain and the city looks amazing. All of the buildings look even more dramatic.  Beautiful.  We then decided it was time to grab a snack.  Of course, Fish and Chips.  We picked a cozy pub that had a great special for eq. $7 USD.  Then off to explore more and back to The Tube and to Heathrow airport to catch our  British Airways flight to Athens, Greece. We had never flown this airline before.  The flight attendants were amazing.  Dressed in the beautiful traditional suits and hair and hat perfectly in place.  Then back to the London Heathrow for our flight to Athens, Greece. We arrived at 3:00 a.m. and by the time we had gotten our luggage it was around 4:00 p.m.  We had inquired via email with the hotel that the taxi from the airport to the hotel was $100 USD. Not an option for our budget. We decided along with the other backpackers that we would take the city bus.  It was only $5 USD per person. There were 10 of us onboard. When we arrived at the bus station, we took an $8 taxi ride to Omonia.  By then it was around 5:00 and the city was already hopping.  Coffee shops and newspaper stands were already open.  We went to the hotel, which was in a great location,  the police station on one side and the underground train just a 5 minute walk. We arrived at the hotel to find that we could not check in until 11:00 a.m.  That was 6 hours we had to kill.  We were both exhausted and JoAnne suggested they just crash on the sofas in the lobby. The manager then told us for $20 bucks, we could check in early.  Bill said absolutely. We hit the sheets and did not wake up until 4:00 p.m.  It was time to hit the road and explore. We bought the 3 day tourist pass for the train and headed to the Acropolis. We walked around town and scoped out what to do the next day and had a beer and pizza.  Lovely town and great European feel.  After exploring for several days in Athens, we took a high speed ferry to the breathtakingly beautiful island of Mykonos and spent several days there.

There we stayed at the most adorable inn.  The room was amazing and overlooked the brilliantly blue Mediterranean Sea.  We rented a scooter the next day from Christof.  We drove around the island.  We hit every beach and even were pleasantly surprised to see a Carrefour Express supermarket. We had not seen one of those since Guadeloupe.  We bought a French baguette, excellent cheese,  and greek olives.  The best olives we have ever had. We never knew olives were supposed to taste like that!     The bonus part was red wine in a wine in a giant plastic bottle water bottle. BRILLIANT!  We visited the ruins, the beaches, and the nightlife.

We then hopped a ferry to the Greek island of Santorini.  We arrived in the afternoon and had made a reservation at a mom and pop inn in Fira.  They were there to pick us up, but some how, the guy had the wrong sign, picked up passengers and not us.  Oh well, immediately a local man in a University of Texas shirt came up and asked where we were from and if we needed help.  We said Texas and he was so happy!  We said, yes, we are in need of a pick up that was included with our reservation.  He said, Oh yes, that is my sister’s husband, I will call him to come and get you.   Well, 40 minutes later the guy shows up.  Well the road is quite something. It is comprised of a million super steep switchbacks straight up the side of the mountain.  Unreal and you can smell the engine. It is also saying I think I can, I think I can.   We arrive to the local welcome drink of wine and honey, called oenomel, with their special additional ingredient of a shot of ouzo. WOWIE!  A little too strong and definitely and an acquired taste.  We had a room that overlooked the sea from atop the hill.  That evening we walked to the Ancient town of Fira.  It is beautiful white washed buildings with windy narrow streets.  They are full of delightful shops and lots of fun people watching.  The restaurants were quite expensive and touristy so we do as we always do, picked a place where the locals go.  It was called Lucky Souvlaki.  Great name, huh.   You order at the counter and sit in bar stools and get out of there with one Souvlaki each and split a monster size (500 ml)  Mythos beer for about $8 USD.  Down the street the people are paying twice as much for the same. We rented a scooter from Mike’s Scooters and rode around the entire island.  The views were amazing and the age of the ruins were hard to comprehend.  There were fields and fields of olive trees and vineyards.
After Santorini, we were off to Rhodes, Greece to meet up with S/V ONCE AROUND.  We left on the midnight ferry and arrived in Rhodes at around 9:00 a.m. Russ and Mary Kay were there to greet us and had rented a car. We loaded up the bags and headed to the marina.  We then were off to anchor out.  They celebrated our arrived with chilled champagne.  So thoughtful!  We loaded up in the dinghy and headed to see the sites.  There is a castle there, and we saw the beautiful walled city.  With them, we sailed and explored the Greek Islands of Rhodes, Kos, Nisyros, Symi, and then onto Turkey where we sailed and explored the Turkish coast and visited numerous cities.

We had a great adventure of sailing from Greek Island to Greek Islands. We then had the joy of going to Turkey.  This is an amazing place!  The economy is booming and many parts of it are extremely metropolitan as you can see from the photos.  We sailed to Bodrum and med moored in the 540 slip Bodrum Milta Marina.  The cost was about 80 euros per night ($115 USD) Yikes!   Bodrum Castle (the Castle of St. Peter), built by the Crusaders in 1402), is located near the marina.

We sailed to Bodrum, Turkey. We Med moored in the 540 slip Bodrum Milta Marina.  The dockage cost was about 80 euros per night ($115 USD) Yikes!   Bodrum Castle (the Castle of St. Peter), built by the Crusaders in 1402), is located near the marina. From there we went to Istanbul, Turkey.   R& M rented a car and we took a great 400 miles road trip. One of Russ' jobs in his life was a New York Taxi cab driver, so he was a FANTASTIC DRIVER!  It was a surprise for JoAnne’s birthday to be in Istanbul. We drove and drove and drove through the amazing country side of Turkey.  Lots of agriculture and lots and lots of factories.  We arrived to the car ferry dock.  We were waiting in line to board and there at the ferry terminal was a McDonald’s.  There were families there with women in their burkas and other traditional garb that had placed orders for Mickey D’s.  We bought some French fries and they tasted exactly the same as we had remembered!  The ferry ride was amazing. We were seeing Asia and Europe at the same time!  Turkey is both part of Asia and Europe.  We then arrived at the ferry dock and finally found a place to park the car.  We unloaded the car.  We had taken a box of wine (5 liters), bottle of Vodka, bottle of Rum, bottle of tonic and Bloody Mary Mix.  Since Turkey is a Muslim country it is difficult to get alcohol and if you do, you will pay a huge premium for it.  Better to be BYOB!  At the ferry dock, we arrived to find out that we had 2 minutes to make the last ferry of the night or we would be stuck on the opposite side. We ran to the terminal saying, please wait, please wait, with our backpacks and liquor in tow.  We had been stuck in bumper to bumper traffic along the main boulevard to get to the ferry for 2 hours. We jumped on the ferry and JoAnne had to pee so bad.  She and Bill headed to the bathrooms and JoAnne immediately looks and says, NO I CANNOT DO IT!  Okay, I have to pee, NO I CANNOT DO IT.  Okay, do not touch anything, do not look at anything, pee faster than you ever have in your life and forget that you are peeing in a trench in the floor that looks like it has not been cleaned in a million years!   Afterwards, JoAnne came running out and next door Bill is peeing with the door wide open as to not touch anything either. JoAnne had not seen this type of facility since she lived in Taiwan as an exchange student.  We arrived at the dock and hiked across the Galata Bridge. Yes, the same one that leads to the famous Galata Tower.  The city was glowing against the night sky.  The trip was amazing.  We had made a reservation for 2 nights, but after 2 nights, we had still not seen all we wanted to see, so stayed another night.  We stayed in the district of Sultanahmet. It was centrally located so that we could walk to all of the famous sites.  We had the surreal experience and visited the Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque, Topaki Palace, The Grand Bazaar, The Spice Bazaar, The Basilic Cistern where Medusa is, the bosopherous boat tour, the famous bridge that connects Europe to Asia, much, much more!

On the way home we wanted to see the famous place called Pamukkale.  It is the travertine pools.  Amazing. When you see it, you think that is it made of snow and ice.  But all travertine and it is surrounded by wonderful ruins. We arrived in Bodrum at around 10:00 p.m.  We did go through 2 checkpoints on the side of the road on the way back from Istanbul. They were checking passports.  A little intimidating since the officials only spoke Turkish and we do not.  They were very polite.

Bill and JoAnne said our goodbyes to Once Around and thanked them for the great adventure.  We caught an all day  bus to Antalya and then spent a couple of days there and then off to Istanbul via Pegasus Airlines. Then American Airlines back to London Heathrow.  We stayed outside of London for 4 days, since we could not get a connection to Miami with our miles until then.   We then flew out on an early morning AA flight to Miami and checked into the Bahia Cabana hotel in  Ft. Lauderdale.  We shopped for boat parts, etc. while there and then onto Windemere/Orlando to see JoAnne's family.  There we had a great time.  We got to visit  and catch up with JoAnne's parents,  brother Tobin and his girlfriend and since we were there for Halloween got to spend time with Karen's daughter, Jenny and husband Dave and wonderful children, Jack and Paige.  After a great visit, we flew on AA to Houston, Texas to see friends and family there.  Our fun friends, Jame and Cecilia hosted a fabulous party for us at their home and invited all of our friends from our old dock at South Shore Harbour Marina.  The bonus was they had just purchased a new Sea Ray and it had just arrived 2 hours before the party!  Great tour of their new toy!  After a whirlwind stay in Texas to see everyone, we caught an early flight to Guatemala City with a connection through  Miami.  We arrived on time, so we rushed to the bus station and were able to catch the bus to Rio Dulce and Marco and Steve of Ocean Star were there topic us up in the Panga (boat).  We arrived home at 11:00 p.m. and we were so happy.  Sailor was a happy camper, too.  That was the longest we had ever been away from him. He did not leave our side all night long and talked alot!

We sincerely appreciate Russ and Mary Kay.  They planned a spectacular itinerary and we saw everything that Greece and Turkey have to offer!  :  )

GUATEMALA CITY:  Important travel advice.  It is divided into different zones.  It is very  important to know which zones you can be in. Zone 10 is the most expensive zone and the lively tourist zone. There are only a few safe zones and the rest of them the police do not even go in.

We flew out of Guatemala City to  London Heathrow airport. There we had a 10 hour layover, so we decided to explore the sites.

GUATEMALA CITY, GUATEMALA

FLIGHT TO LONDON AND LONDON LAYOVER!

We had a great flight to London. We ended up being in England twice.  One our London Layover adventure and then on our return from Turkey, we stayed just outside of London in Feltham.  Great location that had the train station and two grocery stores a block away.  While in London the second time, we visited all of the great sites again, but some of the real highlights were to see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and to take a great train trip through the countryside to Windsor Castle. There was hardly anyone there, so we had the whole thing practically to ourselves.  We also were invited to stay for the Evensong Service at the St. George's Chapel. AMAZING!  Along 3 sides of the room were thrones for all of the knights with the knights flags flying high above. There were the thrones for the King and Queen. Plaques on each one of them all the way up to the ceiling along the chair back for all of knights that have sat there.  JoAnne sat in the seat (throne) that had Henry 8th plaque and countless others.  Bill sat in Prince William's throne.  How appropriate. He is my Prince Charming. :  )    DOUBLE AMAZING!  It was misty rainy outside and here we were with only candlelight to light up the chapel and the priest at the front singing the sermon. The boy's choir and men's choir were sitting all around us. It was a magical experience of a lifetime and brought tears to our eyes. Unfortunately, many of these churches do not let you take photos.  They want you to purchase post cards. After the service, we left the grounds and headed up the street (which reminded us of a Kincade painting) with glowing streets lights and misty rain.  We got a hot cup of coffee at McDonald's to go and sat and watched the full moon over Windsor Castle.  BRILLIANT!

MYKONOS

WE HAVE ARRIVED IN BEAUTIFUL MYKONOS

This was a very sexy island.  Beautiful beaches, beautiful people, beautiful shops and restaurants, and not expensive!  This island is compared to the Spanish Island of IBIZA for its' party atmosphere.  Almost all of the beaches are nude beaches and there is music everywhere. However, some of the areas are the most tranquil places ever! Everybody is very friendly and some of the most amazing vistas of landscape we have ever seen!  The bonus is there was also a Carrefour Express grocery store that we had not seen since our days in the Eastern Caribbean in Martinique and Guadeloupe.  Great wine, bread and cheese!
