S/V ULTRA
Captains Bill & JoAnne Harris
GUADELOUPE TO GRENADA
APRIL 21, 2012 - AUGUST 1, 2012
Ahoy, Everyone,
Hope all is well there and this email finds you all happy and healthy. It has been a little crazy aboard Ultra lately.
We are currently in St. George's, Grenada for the hurricane season.
Since we last updated our blog we have had great visits with both local and cruiser friends in Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and then to beautiful Grenada again for hurricane season. The downside was Dengue Fever , but the upside was we celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary and Ultra became a Chapel of Love for our wonderful friends from Texas, Darryl and Laurie.
Tropical Storm Ernesto decided to make its' way towards Grenada, but then the path changed and the storm hit St. Lucia. We battened down the hatches and removed all of the sails, canopies, stuff on deck, etc. Lots of work, but worth it if we had gotten bad weather. Good thing is we have lots of practice since we lived on the Gulf Coast of Texas for all of these years. We have another storm brewing out there, so we will keep an eye on it.
We hope that you enjoy this blog and we appreciate all of you support as we are chasing our sailing dreams!
Cheers,
JoAnne and Bill : )

MAY 8, 2012
Today Wild Thing will be heading to St. Lucia to store their boat for the season. We got some of their goodies before they left. The best part was the humongous can of peaches and the Dune Buggy almonds. After that we helped our friend Martin, of Providence fiberglass his boat. It was so fun, and all of the locals came over to help out, too. And of course give their two cents on the best way to do it. : ) By the area on the beach, there is a Rastafarian Family that has built a treehouse. They have three children and they oldest is about 5 years old. They are raising their adorable family in the tree house built from scratch. Looks like Noah's Ark.

MAY 13, 2012
Today we departed Portsmouth for Roseau, Dominica
Our good friend Michael of the boat name, Nature Girl, comes by almost every day to visit, check on us, and also to see if we need any fresh produce. We always have an ice cold fruit juice for him. We will miss him and all of our other friends that we have met in Dominica. Michael has a great personality and we had fun giving him a photo shoot and then printed out the photos for him to take home. Martin of Providence also came by to say safe travels and we will see them again one day, too.
MAY 14, 2012
We are now in Roseau on a mooring ball. The water is so deep that you must pick up a mooring ball. We picked up a mooring ball from Sea Cat. Very nice guy and a great tour guide. We are headed to do another great hike on a Segment of the Waitukubuli Trail, waterfalls, and hot springs.

This is a great spot where you can snorkel on a live volcano.
You can actually see the vents and hear the water/steam coming through
the sea floor. Amazing! It feels as if you are swimming in a champagne
flute and the bubbles are dancing around you and tickling your body. After Champagne Beach we headed to snorkel the Pinnacle at Scott's Head.

ANOTHER FABULOUS SUNSET |
MAY 19, 2012
We dove the wrecks of St. Pierre that were caused by the 1902 eruption of Mt. Pelee with Steve and Alice today. Unfortunately, on this trip to St. Pierre, we spotted numerous lionfish. These were at about 75-85 ft.

AFTER A GREAT DAY OF DIVING, IT WAS DINNER ABOARD ULTRA WITH ALICE AND STEVE |
MAY 20, 2012
We then headed ashore to tour the town and also to check in at Fort De France since the computers in St. Pierre are down. After our errands, we arrived back in St. Pierre and met a very nice lady that is a local T.V. personality and is also responsible for the festival that is on May 22. It is the Festival celebrating the abolishment of slavery. She invited us to come to this wonderful event.
MAY 21, 2012
Today we had a great dive on some additional wrecks.
We had a great hike to the Depaz Rum Distillery. It is so beautiful. We have great photos of our stay in St. Pierre, but unfortunately, we cannot locate them. The man who started the distillery, lost his entire family in the 1902 volcano eruption.
MAY 22, 2012
Today they are putting the finishing touches on the festival setup. We headed ashore. What a great event! Wonderful costumes, art, food, drinks, dancing and music. The best part was that they had a spectacular fireworks show at night. It was so big that they had everyone reanchor their boats very far from the pier that they were firing them from.
MAY 23, 2012
We sailed toward Fort De France, but decided to anchor at Shoelcher today. It has a great dinghy dock and it is a short bus ride to the Hyper U, like Super Walmart, but with a French Flair and also several hardware stores nearby.
MAY 24, 2012
Today we headed to Hyper U with Steve and Alice.
MAY 25, 2012
It is raining so much today. After filling the water tanks and the water jugs, the rain finally breaks for a bit. We launched the dink and headed ashore. Picked up the bus and headed to the hardware store. We are looking to replace our headliner in the main salon of Ultra. We find a store that has it. The only problem is we do not speak French very well and we needed to ask some questions. Turns out that the salesman speaks Spanish. We spoke to him in Spanish and he was able to get the material for us and then arrange for a pickup truck to take us to the dock. The driver spoke only French and we all 3 piled up in the front seat. It was a standard, so that even added to the adventure. We loaded up all of the 10 pieces of 8 ft. long material and headed to the dock. The driver helped us unload it in the pouring down rain. What a great guy! It was quite an adventure for sure.
MAY 26, 2012
We sailed to Anse a L'Ane which is near Trois Ilets. We toured the island.
MAY 27, 2012
Today we headed to Le Mitan by dink to explore the beach and more sites.
MAY 28, 2012
We then sailed with Ocean Star to Grand Anse D' Arlet. This is one of our favorite places to anchor. It reminds us alot of Deshaies,Guadeloupe. We snorkeled with Ocean Star and then had a great Happy Hour.
MAY 29, 2012
We hung out with Ocean Star in Grand Anse D'Arlet for another day before we have to say our temporary goodbyes. They have company flying in a few days.
MAY 30, 2012
Today we sailed to Le Marin and anchored off of St. Anne. We headed ashore to load up on one last load of French Items that we love at the Leader Price Grocery. The deals on French Wine are amazing. We also needed to get rid of our Euros. We have more bad weather coming, so we need to head south again to another safe anchorage.
MAY 31, 2012
Sailed from Le Marin to Rodney Bay, St. Lucia. We headed ashore to check in. While there, we ran into our friends, Bill and Laurie aboard S/V Manana. We will meet them later for a beer at Happy Hour at the Ocean Club. We also saw that M/V Cardea is in the marina. We went to say Hi. Today we sailed to Marigot Bay, St. Lucia. We had a great sail. Just before we got to the entrance a tremendous rainstorm hit. We waited for a while, and then headed in when it lightened up some. We collected lots of water and filled all of tanks. FREE WATER! LOVE IT!! Break out the shampoo and soap! We headed to Doolittle's to visit our friends that work there and for the Happy Hour tradition of a $2.50 USD Rum Punch each and a dip in the pool. After the rain, it was definitely hot and steamy.
